AUGUST SPECIAL OFFERING—Humanitarian Aid for Immigrants at the Border
AUGUST 18

August's Special Offering will provide humanitarian aid to immigrants and asylum seekers on our southern border. The El Valle District of the Rio Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church is a partner with The Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, TX. If you write a check, make it out to King Avenue UMC and write "Humanitarian Aid Border."

The Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, TX receives persons who have been processed and released by the Border Patrol and who will travel to other parts of the country, awaiting legal action. The center provides showers, a hot meal, medications, and backpacks of snacks and other supplies for travelers' journeys. The El Valle District of the United Methodist Church makes these purchases. The District Superintendent of the El Valle District, Dr. Robert Lopez, recently volunteered at HRC. He reported that 1000 people a day were welcomed at the center.

“I believe this is sacred work. It’s sacred because the immigrant refugees who have gathered here are part of our community. It’s sacred because children de- serve our very best as the church. It’s sacred because this crisis moves us past our comfort zone and helps us move deeper towards God and one another. I understand the border brings complex issues to us. But part of this work is not complicated; it’s simply sacred. This is sacred work because we get to help restore dignity and help serve dinners.”
