Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 13, 2020

On Friday, November 20th, join us for the Columbus Trans Day of Remembrance.

Due to the COVID pandemic, our service will be different this year.
• 6:00 - 8:00pm at King Avenue United Methodist Church for a walk-through memorial and art installation by Briden Schueren.
•
9PM we will present a virtual program on YouTube (check our event for the link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1234741380236779) with speakers, artists and performers that you can watch from the safety and comfort of your home. You can pause, rewind, or fast forward, and take it at your own pace.

On Monday, November 23rd, a fully edited version of the entire event (including vigil) will be available on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/columbustranspride.

We hope this will be an opportunity to reflect and heal together, as a community. Safety is our top concern, and we ask that you wear a mask and practice social distancing if you choose to join us in person at King Avenue UMC. If you can’t join in person for whatever reason, that’s perfectly okay. We invite you to then tune in Friday at 9PM for our virtual program, and watch the full recording on Monday the 23rd.

We know you’re tired. We know you’re burnt out. This year has thrown one thing after another at us, and on top of everything else we face higher levels of trans violence than ever before. Even now as we await the outcome of this election, we don’t know what will happen next, how to prepare for it, or how to respond to it.

And yet, we can’t stop here.

Perhaps the most powerful quality of the trans community is our resilience. We are painfully aware of the danger we face every day just for being who we are, and the price that too many of our siblings had to pay just for being who they were.

Especially our trans siblings of color.

Especially our Black trans sisters.

And yet, every year we gather to uplift and support one another, and to remember lost friends  and family. But we also have to remember the strength that led us to this point. We have to remember that we know how to survive, and that we will continue to survive, simply because we have no other choice.

In strength and solidarity,
