Statement on Anti-Trans Board of Education Legislation

December 1, 2022

Board of Education Anti-Trans Resolution

The state's Board of Education has before them a "Resolution to Oppose the Proposed Changes to Title IX and to Affirm Parental Rights and Local Control of Ohio K-12 Education" (read the resolution here). The BOE has been considering this resolution for several months, and this is simply the latest iteration of it. This resolution, if adopted, could harm transgender students. It would make clear that the board stands against basic protections for transgender students in public schools and seeks to influence Ohio school districts to follow suit, making schools unsafe places for transgender students.
The BOE will consider this resolution in their December 12-13 meeting. King Avenue UMC stands against this resolution and urges the Board of Education to vote NO on it. This resolution will cause harm, and we love our LGBTQIA+ members, students, families, and community members too much not to raise our voice in opposition to this harmful policy.
